botox stratica dermatology anti wrinkle treatments

What is Botox/Dysport?

Botox and Dysport are neuromodulators used to treat dynamic wrinkles caused by repetitive facial muscle movement. These injectable  treatments temporarily relax targeted muscles, helping to soften the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines while preventing them from becoming more deeply set over time.

In addition to cosmetic use, neuromodulators are also used medically to assist with conditions such as TMJ pain, chronic headaches or migraines, and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis).

Benefits of Botox/Dysport:

• Softens the appearance of expression lines
• Helps prevent wrinkles from becoming more deeply set
• Can improve facial balance and symmetry
• Non-invasive treatment with minimal downtime
• Can assist in managing TMJ pain, migraines, and hyperhidrosis
• Quick treatment with gradual, natural-looking results

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Cosmetic treatment areas include:
• Horizontal forehead lines
• Frown lines
• Brow lifting and shaping
• Crow’s feet
• Necklines
• Nasal crease
• Chin crease
• Mouth downturn and lip lines

Medical treatment areas may include:
• Forehead, temples, back of the head, and neck for migraines
• Masseter muscles for TMJ pain or jaw clenching
• Underarms, forehead, hands, and feet for hyperhidrosis

How It Works:

Botox and Dysport work by temporarily blocking nerve signals to targeted muscles. This prevents muscle contraction, allowing the overlying skin to relax and appear smoother. Because these treatments work at the muscle level, they are most effective for wrinkles caused by facial movement rather than volume loss.

How Long Do Results Last?

Results typically begin to appear within a few days, with full effects visible within 7–14 days. On average, results last approximately 3–4 months, though individual factors such as metabolism, lifestyle, and treatment area can influence duration.

Is There Any Downtime?

Botox and Dysport treatments involve minimal to no downtime. Most appointments take approximately 30 minutes, and patients can return to normal daily activities afterward.

Post-care guidelines include:
• Avoid lying flat or rubbing the treated area for at least 4 hours
• Avoid alcohol, exercise, saunas, or excessive sweating for 48 hours
• Avoid Retin-A or similar products for at least 2 days
• Avoid laser, IPL, or skin tightening treatments for 24 hours
• Makeup may be applied the day after treatment

Is It Painful?

Most patients experience minimal discomfort during treatment. You may feel a slight pinch or brief stinging sensation at the injection sites. Treatments are generally well tolerated and quick.

If you have concerns about discomfort, this can be discussed with your provider prior to treatment.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

It is common to experience mild redness, swelling, tenderness, or small bruises at injection sites, which typically resolve quickly. While some changes may be noticeable early on, full results develop over 7–14 days.
A follow-up appointment is often recommended approximately two weeks after treatment to assess results and make any necessary adjustments.

How Many Units of Botox/Dysport Do I Need?

The number of units required varies based on:
• The area being treated
• Muscle strength
• Individual anatomy
• Desired outcome

During a consultation, your provider will assess your facial structure, discuss your goals, and recommend an appropriate treatment plan. Unit amounts vary from person to person and from area to area.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Botox/Dysport?

Botox and Dysport may be suitable for individuals who:
• Are concerned about expression lines or preventative treatment
• Experience jaw clenching or TMJ discomfort
• Suffer from chronic headaches or migraines
• Have excessive sweating in targeted areas

A consultation with a qualified medical professional is required to determine whether treatment is appropriate.
