What are Fillers?

Fillers are gel-like substances that are injected beneath the skin to restore lost volume, smooth out lines around the nose and mouth (a.k.a. marionette lines, smile lines, and parentheses), enhance and restore volume to sunken cheeks or temples, diminish vertical lip lines, plump & enhance the lips, smooth out a chin crease, and improve symmetry among facial features.

How many treatments will I need to see results?

The number of dermal filler treatments needed to achieve desired results varies based on individual factors such as the specific treatment area, the type of filler used, and personal aesthetic goals. In some cases, patients may notice immediate improvements after a single session, while others may require multiple sessions spaced over time to achieve optimal results.

At Stratica Dermatology, we offer complimentary consultations with our expert nurse injectors to discuss your unique needs and develop a personalized treatment plan. They can discuss your goals and guide the number of sessions required for the best outcome. Keep in mind that maintenance treatments may be recommended to sustain the results over time.

Are Fillers Painful?

The level of pain experienced during dermal filler injections can vary, and factors such as personal pain tolerance and the specific area being treated can influence the sensation. Many dermal fillers also contain a local anesthetic, such as lidocaine, to minimize discomfort during the treatment. Additionally, your provider will apply a topical numbing cream to the target area to help manage pain and increase comfort.

While some people may describe the sensation as a minor discomfort or a slight pinch, others may find it painless. The procedure is usually quick, and any discomfort is temporary. Our expert providers at Stratica Dermatology will take steps to ensure your comfort during the procedure.

What is the difference between fillers & Botox?

Anti-wrinkle treatments (including Botox & Dysport) and dermal fillers are cosmetic treatments with distinct purposes. Botox and Dysport are neuromodulators that temporarily relax muscles, reducing dynamic wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements. Results are noticeable between 1-2 weeks post-treatment. In contrast, dermal fillers add volume, filling in static wrinkles and restoring lost facial volume. They provide immediate results, addressing concerns like nasolabial folds and enhancing features like cheeks and lips. The choice between Botox/Dysport and dermal fillers, or a combination of both, depends on individual goals and the specific aging concerns to be addressed. Stratica Dermatology offers complimentary personalized treatment planning to see if Botox/Dysport or Fillers is the proper treatment for you.

Potential Side effects

After the injection, some common injection-related reactions might occur. These reactions include: erythema, swelling, bruising, pain, itching, infection, post inflammatory nodule, sequelae thereof, or tenderness at the implant site. Typically, resolution is spontaneous 24-48 hours after injection in the skin, and two to seven days after injection in the lips.

Additionally, palpable lumpiness and a light blue/gray color within the skin have been noted after use in some patients. There is a potential risk with any injectable that the material could be inadvertently injected into the dermal blood vessels, which could lead to vascular occlusion in the end-artery with corresponding consequences (necrosis, blindness, stroke).

Lastly, there is a remote risk of allergic reactions causing prolonged raised lumpiness, itching, and possible abscess and anaphylaxis to local anesthetic.
